You can show papers that your dog is an Am Staf (if he is registered) and they ARE considered different breeds by the AKC. BUT, to the general public, your neighbors, family, friends, insurance companies and the law, your Am Staf IS a "pit bull". That's just the way it is because Am Stafs "look" like a pit bull. You will have to deal with all that comes with that. Do you have papers on the dog to show your vet? Most vets don't know much about dog breeds per se and even fewer are familiar with the confusion between Am Stafs and Pit Bulls. Be sure there are no laws regarding pit bulls in your community, be sure your homeowners insurance covers you with a pit bull and you just won't convince your neighbors. Be VERY careful as neighbors can become a BIG problem. You cannot make any mistakes with the dog. It can't get out, can't bark, and can't act out on the other side of a fence. It must NEVER run loose. Also, they are easily and commonly stolen. Be careful.
