The original costume would have been the work of Herb Trimpe I suspect, as the first artist on the character.

: Hmm. Wizard, written by Americans I presume,
: wants CB to go back to the original costume,
: one designed by an American as an idea what
: a British hero should wear, as opposed to
: the costume designed by a British artist
: (Alan Davis).
: Pardon my ignorance, but who was it who
: designed the original red costume? As I
: said I was introduced to Cap in
: And while your point is a very good one, I
: think they just like the red and lion look
: better . Me, I like the Union Jack look
: like his uniform in the early days of
: "Excalibur." I am okay with his
: current one as seen on the cover to
: "New Excalibur" #1, though.
: I actually like Kelsey's costume, and it
: seems from the solicits to "New
: Excalibur" #4 that she has taken the
: codename Lionheart, which suits her
: character well, I think.
