I really enjoyed this first issue of LAST DEFENDERS. While the appearances by Brothers Grimm and Scorcher were basically not much, and I didn't like not seeing the reported new Gypsy Moth, I was still intrigued by the rest of it. It was nice to see the Sons of the Serpent again, as well as a relative of that old DEFENDERS supporting player Pennyworth. I also liked Nighthawk's quest to start the Defenders again and his honest reaction to Iron "I Must Control EVERYTHING" Nazi Man's need to choose the roster. The subplots were cool, too, from the return of old Defenders baddie Yandroth, last seen in the first ORDER (aka DEFENDERS Vol.2) series by Busiek to the return of Krang. And the team of Nighthawk, She-Hulk, Colossus and Blazing Skull was an interesting mix, even for just two issues. Ultimately there will be a final Defenders roster of four by the end of issue six, the Defenders roster Yandroth mentioned as "fated by destiny". There will be:
A mystic
A brute
A water elemental
And one who will be strong enough to lead them.
Well, Nighthawk will likely be the leader, while -- judging from the subplot -- the Son of Satan will be the mystic. so we have so far:
Nighthawk
Son of Satan
Who will be the brute and the water elemental? I hope one of them will be female, preferably the water elemental. Which female has water powers in the MU? For that matter, which male has these powers?
Anyway, so far, so good for Last Defenders. The artwork is fine enough, although a bit odd in places, and there's a bit too many joking parts, but I am looking forward to seeing what happens next.
