As a matter of fact, I AM an ASE master and have been since 1988, which means nothing at all. I had to have it where I used to work for ten years, seven of which I ran the shop. Our shop has worked on just about everyhitng on the road and specialized in classic/antique cars and has also worked on Porsche, Ferarri, Lotus and many other specialty cars. A 1932 Nash streetrod that we did even beat Boyd Coddington's car at the Streetrod Nationals in the mid 90s. I specialized in electrical and AC repairs while there. Myself (and most REAL mechanics) also know that you can have an 80-year old woman who can't pump her own gas study for a month for the ASEs and become a master without even being able to change you own oil. ASE is a private, for profit organization whose "test" became industry standard due to the simple fact that there weren't any other standards. It truly means nothing. I got smart and got away from twisting wrenches like a monkey and started my own business. I'd never wrench professionally ever again. Oh, my MACS number is #000001, which mean I was the first one to become "certified" for refrigerant handling, unless there was a #000000. And I'm not a prick...I just know how to keep a shop's reputation, keep customers happy and keep their cars out on the road without half-assed techs doing certain things. And one thing I can tell you is that you don't set timing belt tension by sound. Prick or not, you simply don't do this- especially to your own car. You may think I'm a prick, but I'm also just trying to keep you from having a $7000 catastrophy on a rare car when it can be avoided. I own a supercharged 87S4 and would cut someone's nutsack off if they did this to my car, except I wasn't a cheapass and bought the correct tool!
