Let's put it this way- when I was shop manager where I used to work, I would have fired you if I found out you let even a Chevette out of the shop by adjusting a timing belt by ear.
Sorry, but you CANNOT get the tension correct by sound, no matter how good you can hear. You cannot tell the difference. You can, however tell if it is WAAAAY too loose (slapping) or WAAAAY to tight (whining), but unless it makes one of these extreme sounds, you are kidding youself. There is a wide range of quiet range adjustment between these two extremeties and there is also a big tension difference that exists in this gap that you (or nobody) can hear.
I can tune a bass or a guitar by ear BECAUSE IT IS PRODUCING A SOUND! A timing belt is not producing a sound, so you simply cannot tune it by ear unless it is so far out of adjustment.
If you want to treat your engine like this, perhaps you should sell your car to somebody that actually cares about it and but yourself a Chevelle or a 'Cuda that has a timing chain instead.
