How to Tell if the Previous Owner Switched to R-134?

10 years ago when I bought my 84, the guy selling it said the guy who owned it before him switched from R-12 to R-134. Is there a way to confirm that? Just for fun, I tried the R-134 connector w/ guage that I had laying around the garage and it fit the '84. Because it fits, does that mean it's probably been converted to R-134?

Whether I need to buy R-134 or R-12, I just know I don't want to mix the two...
