If you suspect the water pump proceed with caution. I had a '79 Euro twenty years ago which on which the water pump froze and snapped the T-Belt while stopped at a red light. I had it towed home, installed an new pump & belt and was back on the road that weekend.
Your 86.5 will not be as lucky ('79 is non-interference).
