If the alternator is defective, fabricate a bracket and spacer and install a late 80's stlye 100-120A Delco alternator with internal regulator. (Do NOT use a Delco "CS" style!)
It has a much cleaner output than most alternators and it has a "hotter" charge at low RPMs. It's also easy to get parts for them. Besides, every parts store in the US has one on the shelf at all times.
Don't use the "one wire" show car units, as they require a rev to start charging and also have a slight parasitic drain when not running.
The alternator on the 928 was really an out-of-date unit even back when the cars were new. The Delco makes a nice upgrade.
