The diodes are not part of the regulator and if one of them shorts out, it can cause the kind of problem that you are describing.
I would recommend taking the alternator to an alternator repair shop and have them check it out. They might even be able to replace a bad diode if one of them is bad which would be a heck of a lot cheaper than buying a new or rebuilt alternator and having them test it out would definitely prove/disprove that the problem is with the alternator.
