I know it's an issue with the standard. I put a later 5 speed in my 79 and had to change the torque tube shift linkage and cradle. It seems the later 5 speeds have about 3/4 inch difference in the forward/backwards alignment. But bolt pattern wise everything would have worked. I thought the auto's were all the same alignment wise. but I'm not really knowledgable on them. Earl should look into it a little more.
