If the ABS module doesn't see a good pulse from the wheel speed sensors, it will turn on the warning lamp. The sensors pick up signals from a toothed gear. Over time metal filings can cover the sensor and fill in the teeth on the gear, so those need to be cleaned out. Cleaning things up and checking for corroded connections often clears ABS faults.
