I had a similar problem on my '86.5 just recently. I know the '88 intake is different, but maybe this is close. On mine some of the rubber boots for the air boxes had slipped and let unmetered air enter system. When using a mirror to find this looked like tiny slits (of course they were underneath) My best guess would be to look for broken/cracked vacume lines where unmetered air is entering
