Posted by dmw 85 Euro S on 7/5/2007, 4:20 am, in reply to "Power Steering Out" I would have someone turn the steering wheel while you look at the pump as it turns to see if you can tell if the belt is slipping or not. I don't recall ever seeing a 928 PS pump fail where it didn't provide power assist to the rack. Every one that I've had to replace was because of leaking but that doesn't mean that they don't go bad. The only way to test is with a hydraulic test guage which could be difficult to find the necessary fittings to be able to do. I would guess that either the belt is slipping, the pump is not putting out enough pressure, or there is contamination somewhere clogging a hydraulic line. If the problem has gradually built up to the point where it is now, I would guess that the pump could be bad. If the problem happened suddenly, then I would suspect that something is plugging a hydraulic line somewhere or the belt is slipping. When a PS system is low on fluid, it makes a distinctive growling sound. Does yours? David

or did it suddenly stop working? I once worked on a car that had a pretty bad PS fluid leak that lubricated the PS belt (which was a bit loose) so much that it slipped on the PS pump pulley without making any noise.
