If you don't have a mechanics stethoscope, use a hose and hold one end to your ear, and the other to various potential sources of the noise. Be very careful not to get it in touch with the belts... So far we have always been able to locate thesource of noises pretty exactly. And saved ourselves from a lot of unnecessary disassembly and reassembly. Best of luck!

On my car it was the bearing in the AC compressor pulley. I replaced it without taking the compressor off the car - just the pulley had to be removed.
