Posted by Wally Plumley Most common problem is power steering pump - low on fluid, air in system, etc. Alternator can also cause a whine, as can the air pump. Best way to tell is to buy a mechanic's stethoscope - really cheap at Harbor Freight, not too bad at any auto parts store. Be careful to stay out of the moving parts! If you don't have or can't get a stethoscope, you can use a long wooden dowel or similar tool, or a four-foot piece of rubber or plastic tubing stuck in your best ear to try to localize the noise. Be careful to stay out of the moving parts!! Wally Plumley
