Preparing for summer ('88 S4 AT)

Hi, I moved from Ohio to Ontario Canada (colder). Car is on jack stands. I need to change the oil cooling hoses. They have been dripping oil on the alternator for a long time. Voltage gauge in car shows 12 volts, at battery I'm getting 13.5 volts. Since it's out I'm thinking of getting it rebuilt. I've heard of single wire alternators as an alternative. It has to be lighter, I can't believe how heavy German components are. Has anyone tried them? Should I get mine rebuilt? Thanks for yor support, David
