I hear a lot of whining around my car, but I'll leave my family life out of this. Could be very many things between the PS pump and the torque tube bearings. An important check is if it changes with clutch in/out. Major engine components don't "whine" so you're safe there. I'll posit a quess as the air pump bearings.
