I live in New Jersey and 311 is pretty huge. There's always the occasional shmoe who has never heard of them but normally if you ask anyone they'll tell you they loe them. (Which usually means they know like 1 song..Down..cough..) 311 has a real big grassroots following. they aren't like mainstream bands where they constantly promote to get people out through television etc.. People just hear about them and find out seeing them live is a great experience..
